Western Switzerland's Digital Ecosystem: Focus on the Canton of Vaud

by Alp ICT

Raffael Maio’s appointment to the Alp ICT Expert Committee comes at a time when issues related to cybersecurity, digital trust, and digital governance are becoming increasingly strategic for companies in French-speaking Switzerland. It also reflects the identity of the Vaud region, which has, over the years, become one of Europe’s leading hubs for technological and digital innovation.

Raffael Maio

Chief Strategy Officer & Chief Operating Officer, Vyntra

With a background in engineering and IT security and more than 18 years at NetGuardians, a pioneering Swiss FinTech company, Raffael Maio is one of those who have quietly helped shape Switzerland’s digital landscape, particularly its cybersecurity sector.

"In the fight against fraud, which has become a veritable game of cat and mouse, the challenge is to combine innovation, operational efficiency, and trust, while leveraging artificial intelligence to adapt to ever-evolving threats."

He is now continuing this journey as Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Operating Officer at Vyntra, a company based in the canton of Vaud. Specializing in financial crime prevention and operational resilience, the company helps financial institutions detect and neutralize threats—such as fraud, money laundering, and cybercrime—that jeopardize the integrity of their operations. These issues have become critical for organizations facing increasingly sophisticated adversaries, growing regulatory requirements, and the need to sustainably protect their assets, data, and the trust of their clients.

“For me, digital transformation isn’t just about adopting new technologies—it’s about rethinking value creation, collaboration, decision-making, and operational security.”

A conviction that extends far beyond the confines of Vyntra. Raffael has successfully leveraged the Vaud ecosystem and its international reach to build his career. It is therefore quite natural that he, too, has committed to sharing his experience and expertise within this ecosystem—as he will now do on the Alp ICT Committee and as he is already doing through the [seal] program, the Vaud innovation initiative for digital trust and cybersecurity.

A multifaceted network of cooperation to address digital transformation in its entirety

Historically recognized for its academic excellence, entrepreneurial vitality, and capacity for innovation, the canton of Vaud is now developing a digital ecosystem that is particularly focused on organizational governance and transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, and applied innovation more broadly. This momentum is driven by a dense network of institutional, academic, economic, and non-profit stakeholders who collectively contribute to strengthening the competitiveness and adaptability of regional businesses in the face of the profound technological changes currently underway.

A wide variety of complementary stakeholders revolve around this ecosystem, helping to address digital transformation in all its cross-cutting dimensions. From AI to digital inclusion, sustainability, culture, and the digitization of SMEs, the Vaud region—supported by the Office for Economic and Innovation Promotion (SPEI)—has gradually built an environment capable of integrating technological innovation, economic development, applied research, and societal challenges.

"The coming years will be decisive for the adoption of artificial intelligence and addressing digital security challenges. The canton’s priority is to ensure that these technologies benefit the entire economic fabric of Vaud, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which must be able to access the expertise they need. This is a long-term effort that requires targeted support and the maintenance of close ties between businesses and centers of expertise.”

Raphaël Conz

Head of the Office of Economic and Innovation Promotion (SPEI)

Among these key players are platforms such asInnovaud, the agency for the promotion of innovation and investment in the canton of Vaud, and the Trust Valley, the Lake Geneva hub for digital trust and cybersecurity, and the Swiss Data Science Center, the interdisciplinary center dedicated to data science and machine learning; at the same time, cultural and societal initiatives offer SMEs broader perspectives on digital transformation, such as the Digital Dreams Festivaland initiatives led by the Digital Gender , or the IT4Future dedicated to issues of IT responsibility and sustainability.

This diversity is particularly relevant in a context where artificial intelligence is poised to become deeply embedded across all economic sectors, value chains, and digital applications. Beyond purely technological issues, this evolution is already challenging organizational models, skills, governance practices, social balances, and, more broadly, our collective relationship to trust, decision-making, and value creation.
