mobileup enables a circular economy for mobiles

by Alp ICT

mobileup is a sustainable exchange and repair platform that turns old into new

After a short lifespan, a smartphone is thrown away or gathering dust in the cellar. The platform wants to change this and enable a circular economy for mobiles: so that a cell phone doesn't circle the world 4 times before arriving in our hand, doesn't emit 58 kg of CO2 and doesn't produce 200 g of electronic waste.

Elias Böni, Beat Hafner, Yves Einfeldt and Sandro Michel founded mobileup, four friends from the Bernese Oberland who complement each other perfectly:

Elias, the entrepreneur, and Yves, the IT specialist, have created mobilepower, an online boutique for cell phone spare parts. It was during his internship at Auto1, a used car exchange platform, that Elias had the idea of taking the concept and adapting it for cell phones. Beat, Elias's general practitioner and roommate at the time, was convinced by the idea of sustainability and completed his studies in international relations by setting up a cell phone repair network. Finally, the trio has been completed since the beginning of 2021 by Sandro, the banker who always has the finances under control.

To illustrate, the market for second-hand smartphones is growing steadily and rapidly: around 10% of the 1.3 billion smartphones sold worldwide each year are now second-hand. The four founders are bubbling over with ideas to give new impetus to their vision of a circular economy for cell phones, which they see as the most sustainable way of dealing with smartphones.

To achieve this quickly and efficiently, they operate according to the Lean Startup "Build, Measure, Learn" cycle.
