Energ-IACK: Artificial Intelligence Aiding the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels in the Geneva Region

by Alp ICT

The Energ-IA Transition association is organizing the first edition of Energ-IACK, a hackathon dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence to the challenges of the energy transition, on November 13 and 14, 2026, in Vernier. Under the theme “Draw Me a Net-Zero,” this open innovation event invites students, professionals, companies, and institutional stakeholders to devise concrete solutions to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels in the Geneva region. The hackathon will center on five challenges proposed by the City of Geneva. Registration—which is free and limited to 50 participants—has been open since October 26, 2026. The projects developed will then be presented at the annual Energ-IA Transition conference on December 1, 2026.

AI and the Challenge of the Energy Transition

At the intersection of artificial intelligence, data science, and energy technologies, Energ-IACK aims to turn the challenges of decarbonization into practical applications. Participants will be invited to explore five key issues:

  • decision support during power crises,
  • the creation of an independent energy data management tool at the municipal level,
  • automated detection of anomalies in data,
  • identifying and prioritizing consumption trends,
  • the development of strategies for phasing out fossil fuels in buildings.

Over the course of two days, multidisciplinary teams of 6 to 8 people, supported by specialized mentors, will work on designing prototypes, digital tools, or methodologies to address these needs. Participants will be able to draw on datasets prepared by Quanthome, a partner of the event, to test their approaches and evaluate their effectiveness.

This hackathon is part of a collaborative initiative that prioritizes open data and open source, with the code developed being released under the MIT license. The projects will be presented to a jury at the end of the two-day event, followed by a public presentation in December.

For technology-based SMEs in French-speaking Switzerland—particularly those active in AI, data analytics, business software, smart buildings, or energy technologies—Energ-IACK offers an opportunity to apply their expertise to operational challenges, explore new use cases, and collaborate with public sector actors, energy specialists, and talent from other disciplines. Beyond experimentation, this collective innovation lab could thus foster the emergence of new digital solutions to support the energy transition and promote their development within the regional ecosystem.
