GSGS'18: a cross-industry opportunity for Swiss industry #SeriousGame #Gamification

par Marco Mari

The GSGS'18 conference is at the interface between industrial needs and original responses, highlighting the playful perspective to meet technical, training, ecological, management and communication challenges. Bringing together the strengths of our country, this event offers a solid bridge between academia and industry, thanks to the participation of over 70 national and international players. Alongside the 40 presentations and demonstrations, the public will be invited to participate actively through discussion forums and round tables.

Contextualization

The "Game" and "Serious Game" (SG) is growing exponentially, almost everywhere in the world, but not everywhere. Indeed, the state of game production in Switzerland still has a long way to go to catch up with countries such as the USA, France or the Netherlands. More specifically, the Swiss IGS industry suffers, as a result, from the absence of an ecosystem that stimulates sustainable growth. Nevertheless, recent initiatives give very promising signals for the establishment of major cornerstones. The most important signal comes from the national parliament, where a motion is under discussion to define a Swiss Federal Council policy that will stimulate the development of the gaming industry in Switzerland. Other initiatives such as Game Culture and the Swiss Game Developers Association (SGDA website) are also contributing to the development of this promising industry. What's more, Switzerland has all the ingredients needed to ensure the rapid development of this sector. The Swiss education system produces highly qualified designers, engineers and entrepreneurs who can successfully implement these strategies.

Building on this promising ground, the "Gamification and Serious Game Symposium" (GSGS) intends to reinforce national and regional efforts and initiatives aimed at increasing the maturity and visibility of the Swiss Serious Games industry.

Perspective

Over the next decade, the average age of regular video and computer gamers is set to rise considerably (particularly with young adults - aged 55 ~ 65 - as potential new key players). The majority of the world's population in general, and the Swiss population in particular, will be regular gamers. This evolution represents a huge opportunity to use games as a medium in a wide variety of fields, from education to health. We are clearly on the verge of the golden age of SG and gamification.

Switzerland must now take advantage of this unique opportunity and define a clear strategy to seize these new opportunities. It's also the right time for GSGS players and communities to step up promotional actions and activities. We firmly believe that this GSGS is about mobilizing local communities and stimulating a certain momentum, which is necessary to create a stimulating Swiss ecosystem.
