Inauguration of the new "Genève, une histoire sur mesure" immersive device
The City and Canton of Geneva officially inaugurated the new immersive device "Genève, une histoire sur mesure" at the Maison Tavel in the presence of Administrative Councillor Kanaan and State Councillor Hodgers. The event was also an opportunity to inaugurate the new location of the immersive device, a custom-built position enabling visitors to enjoy the show even more.
Produced as part of the centenary of Swiss cadastral surveying in 2012, "Genève, une histoire sur mesure" is an immersive device using a double projection system on a 3D model and a front screen. In twelve minutes, it covers the development and occupation of Geneva's territory up to the present day, comparing the city's scientific data, its cartographic heritage, contemporary surveys from the SITG database and representations of the city through the ages.
Mobile at its conception, the installation toured the Swiss cantons before joining the permanent exhibition at Maison Tavel. With the help of the Bru Foundation and the renewed support of the Department of the Territory, the animation will be relocated and technologically upgraded in 2022.
Set of pilings from a palafittic village
In its new presentation, the immersive device will be accompanied by a set of pilings from a palafittic village (remains of prehistoric dwellings). These pilings, preserved by the water, were removed from the lake and analyzed by the cantonal archaeology service. Thanks to this analysis, their dating and cutting method were determined. These pilings are reminders of the time when people lived on the banks of the lake during periods of low water. Today, the cantonal archaeology service is lending this set of pilings to the Maison Tavel to complete the exhibition.
Enhancing intangible heritage
This model highlights the wealth of immaterial geographical data held by the State and City of Geneva, describing our cantonal territory. All this heritage is available on the SITG cartographic site and contributes to the discovery of geoinformation and geodata science.
