On-Device Generative AI: from Cloud to Local
At CES 2024, artificial intelligence played a central role, with particular attention paid to advances in "On-DeviceGenerative AI", which refers to a form of generative AI that runs directly on a local device, such as a smartphone, tablet or personal computer, rather than on remote servers or in the cloud.
This trend highlights technological innovations that transform the user experience, combining advanced hardware solutions with software. These advances underscore the growing ability of AI to operate autonomously on local devices, offering a more fluid and secure experience.
Qualcomm Incorporated, an American company specializing in mobile technology, shared its vision during a presentation by its President & CEO, Cristiano Amon:
"As we enter the era of generative AI, and in particular on-device generative AI, we are moving towards significant changes in how we interact with our devices. The continuous and ubiquitous use of AI directly on the device will revolutionize our user experience, making it more natural, intuitive, relevant and personal. This will lead to greater immediacy, as well as improved privacy and security."

A trend reinforced by Samsung' s announcement of its new Galaxy S24 range of smartphones, featuring an innovative live translation feature called Live Translate. This feature enables users to translate phone calls and text messages in 13 languages in real time, offering both audio and text translations of conversations. Live Translate is based on Google's AI model, Gemini Nano, and stands out for its ability to automatically adapt to the language of each contact, configuring the appropriate language for future calls.
We're witnessing a major breakthrough in the way we communicate by erasing language barriers, making communication more accessible and fluid in a globalized context. The move to On-Device Generative AI also marks a major paradigm shift for the future, with several key impacts.
The user experience
On-device generative AI makes interactions with devices more natural and intuitive. Users will benefit from more personalized and relevant experiences, tailored to their individual needs and preferences.
Confidentiality and security
Data processing directly on the device enhances confidentiality and security. Sensitive data no longer needs to be sent to a remote server, reducing the risk of data leakage and hacking.
Accessibility and autonomy
On-device generative AI operates independently of a constant Internet connection, making it useful in situations where connectivity is limited or non-existent. This enables greater device accessibility and autonomy, particularly in remote or underserved areas.
Responsiveness and efficiency
Local data processing enables faster responsiveness of AI applications, eliminating the latency associated with communication with a remote server. This translates into faster responses and interactions with the device.
Reducing dependence on the Cloud
This approach reduces dependence on centralized cloud infrastructures, enabling greater resilience and flexibility of IT systems.
Sustainability
By processing data locally, we reduce the load on remote data centers and, consequently, the carbon footprint associated with these centers' energy consumption.
In short, generative AI on device is a step towards a more integrated, secure and personalized technology, paving the way for many innovations and improvements in our daily interaction with technology.
