With its maturity and level of adoption growing steadily, particularly and mainly in the finance sector, blockchain technology holds many opportunities. However, in order to reveal itself more widely and extend to other sectors, beyond the awareness-raising and popularization still needed to initiate this technology, particularly among SMEs and these possible uses, the regulations that will frame its development will become a fundamental aspect to further encourage more massive adoption. This is the angle from which this 3rd edition of the GEC will be approached.
The use of blockchain technology raises a number of important regulatory issues that require particular attention from legislators and regulators alike, as well as from SMEs wishing to capitalize on this technology within their businesses.
Firstly, the decentralized nature of blockchain poses a number of challenges in terms of legal liability, since transactions are not overseen by a central entity. This raises questions about how to regulate and monitor activities without compromising the fundamental principles of this technology. Secondly, the issue of privacy is also crucial, as although blockchain offers a high level of security, the anonymization inherent in its system could hinder risks to data confidentiality. Finally, it is essential to develop regulatory frameworks that foster innovation while protecting users and maintaining financial stability, which requires close collaboration between technology developers, companies, regulators and legislators.
